Grímsvötn eruption 2011I was on my way to dinner about 50km east of Reykjavík last night when we saw the mushroom clouds that could't be anything but ash cloud from the volcano. It was a bit strange because we had just listened to the news in the radio but there was no mention of it there.
As it turned out it started 19.15 last night and we were looking at it right from start.
The whole area is restricted and this volcano is in the middle of Vatnajokull, the largest icecap in Iceland. Visibility is slim due to ash. Airports are closed but the weather is fine in Reykjavík.
This is the biggest eruption in this are for 130years.
Scientist say its 10 times bigger that Eyjafjallajokull last year. The ash is much more coarse and should not disrupt airtraffic in Europe.
